FAIRHAVEN, Mass. - The Pentagon has confirmed that a Marine lance corporal who lived in Jacksonville was among six Marines who died when their truck rolled over in a flash flood in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Patrick Gallagher who died Sunday.

His mother says her son was driven in part to enlist because he had a cousin who was killed in the World Trade Center during the September eleventh, 2001 terrorist attacks.

That's when her son became "really gung-ho" she says about joining the military. He was accepted about two years ago.

His brother Michael is serving in the Navy.

The Pentagon listed Gallagher's home town as Jacksonville, where he lived with his wife, Elizabeth, and their 2-year-old son, Evan.

Gallagher was assigned to the First Marine Logistics Group, One Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, California.

According to an Associated Press count, as of yesterday, at least two-thousad-346 members of the U-S military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.
